American Idol News—Paula, Sanjaya and Ozzy
Posted by Wendy Michaels Categories: Music, Prime Time, Reality, FOX, American Idol,
The American Idol finale may be behind us (thank god), but that doesn’t stop Idol news from happening. Granted, it’s not as juicy as who’s going to win, but it’s something for fans to feed on until the next edition of the talent show hits the airwaves. First up, Paula Abdul is saying that she has “found her purpose” on Idol: “I knew since I was a little girl that I had this profound way of touching people.” Um, yeah. And those honking paychecks don’t have anything to do with her “purpose” do they? On to Sanjaya—who appeared on the finale with Aerosmith guitarist Joe Perry (why they gave him the spotlight I still can’t figure out)—was supposed to appear with Ozzy Osbourne. I suppose that would be more of a clash of personality, but Ozzy sobered up and came to his senses, pulling out of the gig at the last minute. An “insider” reported that Osbourne said, “he didn’t want to be onstage with that idiot.” Who knew Ozzy could be so sensible?

David’s Channel Surfing Thoughts

Yes, even more thoughts I’ve had about TV for the past few days, laid out for you in easy-to-read paragraph format.
MOLLY SHANNON ANNOYS & DELIGHTS – Saturday Night Live came back with a new episode recently starring Molly Shannon (she’s ostensibly there to promote her movie “Year of the Dog,” but I really think SNL looks for any excuse to have it’s former cast members return) and it was … pretty much what I thought it was going to be. I used to remark when Ms. Shannon was on the show that she didn’t have many characters, just the same character in different outfits and wigs. That character comes out, goes through her catch phrases and/or crazy falls, and then the sketch is over. That’s Mary Katharine Gallagher, that’s Sally O’Malley (the I’m 50! Lady), that’s Ann Miller (from “Leg Up”).
And she did those first two characters when she hosted and it was annoying and really not funny. The laughter always felt more like a reflex from the audience than an actual “this is funny” laugh.
But what Molly Shannon also can do (and I heard Mike White, the writer/director of “Year of the Dog,” mention this in an interview) is be really funny when she’s quiet and not so over-the-top. Like the Delicious Dish sketch (aka Schwetty Balls) and her typical 80’s mulleted stand-up comedienne.
She did the stand-up comedienne character on Weekend Update and that was great, and she played a quieter part in a very good presidential debate sketch. So, it was a mixed bag: nothing great, but nothing too awful.

Idol Judge Misjudges Footing
Posted by K.C. Morgan Categories: Music, Prime Time, Reality, FOX, American Idol, Talent, Gossip, News,
American Idol’s dewy-eyed judge, morale coach, and former songstress can add at least one more credential to her resume: accident survivor. Paula Abdul discovered just how dangerous house pets can be this week, even when enjoying a relaxing day at home. Abdul was walking around her pad and trying to avoid stepping on Tulip, her pet Chihuahua, when she fell (apparently, on her face). The most inane Idol judge of them all suffered a broken nose from the incident, but reports say she is recovering nicely. The nose shouldn’t be enough to keep Paula away from her sideline position by the Idol stage this week, however. Paula, along with Simon and Randy, will judge the final performances by the two remaining American Idol competitors, then watch as only one is crowned the sixth American Idol of the land. Everything should be fine as long as there are no tiny dogs in sight…or, underfoot.
Randy Jackson’s Reality Show

It was only a matter of time before American Idol‘s Randy Jackson jumped on the reality show bandwagon. After all, Simon Cowell and Paula Abdul are both in the reality programming zone, why not Jackson? His new show, World Moves, will feature dance teams competing for an international touring contract. NBC has already picked up the series, to air in 2007/2008. Not quite the same as So You Think You Can Dance, given the team competition, but still a very familiar reality premise. Since Jackson doesn’t have dancing expertise, he’ll team up with the World Hip Hop Championship. Auditions should be underway soon, with teams of five to seven dancers around the world showing their moves. Those that make the cut, go to Los Angeles to dance off for the finals. Yada, yada, yada, viewers vote and one team is axed each week until the final team is left standing. Be on the lookout for this series sometime in late fall.

Hey, Paula’s Got Another Show!
Posted by K.C. Morgan Categories: Reality, Bravo, Cable,
Insipid, sweet, tearful – these are only some of the adjectives one might use to describe American Idol judge Paula Abdul. But Bravo hopes to add a few more words to the list by depicting Paula in a new reality show. No, she won’t be judging singing – or, thankfully, anything else. In Bravo’s new Hey Paula, Ms. Abdul will simply live her life as cameras follow her around. Remember Anna Nicole Smith’s offbeat, wacky little ways during the days of The Anna Nicole Show? Early opinion is that Paula will make Anna look like a straight-laced citizen by comparison. In one early episode, Paula will be shown visiting jewel shops in preparation for the Grammys. The jeweler will freak out while Paula allows her two doggies to treat diamonds like chew toys – and she’ll laugh and laugh, like she’s listening to fellow Idol judge Simon Cowell. Bravo will debut several more shows in their ongoing quest to find a winner, including a posh estate-flipping show, millionaire matchmaking, a high-end reality travel agency, and a behind-the-scenes glimpse of a luxury Palm Springs hotel. That really is Bravo’s upcoming line-up…I couldn’t make this up if I tried.

Guess who I am: I only have one Spanish-language album to my credit, yet American Idol has already deemed me a Latin-music afficionado. If you guessed JLo—I mean Jennifer Lopez—then you’d be right.
Well - no matter how well she may/may not sing…we all know that Jennifer can dance and put on a show. Was she able to help infuse a little rhythm and spice into the contestants’ performances? Read on!

Idol Extends Results Shows
Posted by Wendy Michaels Categories: Music, Reality, FOX, American Idol,
Ugh. Just when I was beginning to enjoy the rapid pace of the half hour American Idol results shows, they’ve gone and changed things up. Beginning April 11th, the Wednesday shows will run an hour and continue that way through May. Now, wouldn’t you think that as the pool of contestants gets smaller, the need for an hour-long show is less necessary too? Ah, no one knows needless filler like American Idol—more dramatic Seacrest pauses, more Ryan/Simon insults, more cheesy group performances. The change apparently comes at the producers’ request, since the eliminated contestants haven’t had enough time to give their final performances. Again though, as the final numbers dwindle, there should be more than enough time to get in that last song.

American Idol: Season 6 Finals - Week One

Okay – am I the only who thinks that Diana Ross is getting a lot of free publicity thanks to Dreamgirls? The Oscars have already come and gone…yet thanks to American Idol, we’ll still be talking about her after tonight’s ‘theme’ show.
Yes, yes, yes…Diana Ross and The Supremes were a great group. But are we really prepared to hear male interpretations of their songs? And more importantly, we will have to endure Sanjaya singing Baby Love?
As always, Week 1 tends to start off a shaky note. Read on to see if Season 6 was the exception:
